Olympian inspires Gullane Primary School pupils

SusanEgelstaff Commonwealth Games medallist and champion badminton player Susan Egelstaff visited Gullane Primary School on June 30th to inspire youngsters to get involved in sport. The former UK No. 1 female player, who won medals in the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and took part in the London Olympics, talked to pupils about her experiences as a player.

Glasgow-born Susan, who has family connections to East Lothian, is a regular visitor to the county and aims to support projects  which provide young people with access to sports facilities. She was keen to find out more about Gullane Sports Development Trust , which is working to provide the community with a multi-purpose astroturf pitch and clubhouse. The entire community has been involved in helping raise funds, with residents of all ages taking part in marathons, cycling, baking, swimming and donating to raise the money needed.

Primary school headteacher Maureen Tremmel said the children enjoyed meeting the former Olympian and hearing her talk, as well as seeing her medals. She said: “Susan is a big supporter of children having access to sports facilities and was particularly impressed by the Gullane Sports Development Trust. Having an all-weather training facility on our doorstep will transform the sporting opportunities for Gullane’s youngsters.”

Super swimmers hit the headlines

Check out page 23 of this week’s East Lothian Courier for a feature on our intrepid fundraising swimmers.

Two days ago they had their practice session at Foxlake, where they had great fun but came out very cold! Let’s hope the water is a little warmer by next week.

Daniel and Joe’s run raises over £130

joedanielJoe (8) and Daniel (6) both play for Gullane Athletic Amateur Football Club and felt that Gullane Sports Development Trust was the perfect cause to raise money for. They chose to run the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 1.5km and, as they had never attempted anything like this before, their main aim was to try and get all the way around without stopping – which they both managed. They are now both planning to do it again next year and go even faster! Daniel and Joe really enjoyed the run and proudly wore their t-shirts and prized medals all day. They were nearly as proud of their medals as their dad, Kerrin, was of their achievement. Gullane Sports Development Trust would like to say a big “Thank You” to Daniel and Joe for raising the fantastic sum of over £130.
